This was utilized to revise soil maps of Indo-Gangetic Plains(IGP) and Black Soil Region(BSR), Agro eco-subregion maps(AESR) of IGP & BSR , Assessed Soil and land quality of IGP and BSR, inputs for Crop modeling and Land evaluation.Developed Av.K map of IGP and BSR for available K application planning 120 series from different states finalized as National register(of300).
2 Basic and Fundamental Research (1)Resolved the myth of Oxisol formation from Ultisol as process of laterization( alkali hydrolysis) is improbable in acid Ultisols of humid tropical India(2)Gibbsite in weathered acid ferruginous soils of India are formed from feldspar/ silliminate in alkaline environment of the past but not from kaolinite.(3)Clay illuviation is a primary pedogenetic process than pedoturbation.in formation of Vertisols (4)Lubinite mineral presence in ferruginous soils is an indicator of subsoil sodicity development due to aridity.(5)Zeolites in shrink swell soil acts as modifier by replenishing Ca precipitated as Ca CO3 and retarding development of sodicity and increase in sHC.
3 Soil Taxonomic Rationale: (1) The mere presence of gibbsite in tropical soils does not indicate the advanced stage of weathering. On the basis of dominant amount of gibbsite, mineralogy class such as allitic or gibbsitic does not establish a legacy between contemporary pedogenesis and the mineralogy. Thus the provision of kaolinitic and gibbsitic mineralogy classes for Ultisols and Oxisols stands for revision. The mineralogy classes tropical soils should be “mixed” instead of Kaolinitic/ gibbsittic/allitic class (2)Developed Taxonomy Rationale for tropical soils (Vertisols, Alfisols, Ultisols, Kandic, and Vertic subgroups) as a chapter in soil survey manual for Indian soil survey staff.
4 1. Studies indicated Ferruginous soils under SAT can sequester >2% SOC under forest system. Horticulture system is better than agriculture to sequester about 1% SOC i.e. sufficiency level if forestry is not feasible. 2.With time inorganic carbon increased in Indian soils which is a bane in spite of increase in organic carbon. A model of understanding was developed on transfer of inorganic carbon in soils and atmosphere to organic form through management interventions by improving vegetative cover thereby sequestration of SOC through plants and soil carbonates dissolution by root exudates.(3)Inverse relation of sHC with ESP and EMP validated in ferruginous soil SAT India.
