Five Major Contributions
S.No.Major Contribution
1 Developed digital soil mapping technology for large scale mapping in India. Implemented IndianSoilGrid project for developing high resolution soil properties maps at national level
2 Desertification and land degradation status of India was mapped at high resolution (Project funded by MOEF&CC, Govt. of India) and the results were adopted by Ministry of Environment and Forest, Climate Change and subsequently shared with UNCCD (https://catalogue.unccd.int/340_Article_Dharumarajan_opment.pdf) as a national database. Methodology was developed to identify the desertification and vulnerable zones based on socio economic and biophysical factors and demonstrated in Anantapur district of Andhra Pradesh
3 Unique methodology was developed for soil texture mapping using time series satellite imageries. The importance of pedogenesis and soil Atterberg limits on landslides were evaluated first time in the landslide prone areas of Western Ghats region. Besides, various pedotransfer functions were developed for predicting soil hydraulic properties in semi-arid regions of Karnataka Plateau.
4 Biophysical and socio-economical causes for increasing fallow lands was evaluated and alternate land use options and policy measures were suggested (Funded by Tamil Nadu state Planning commission). The results are now basis for (https://onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/full/10.1111/sum.12361) state planning commission who initiated the work to bring out fallow lands into cultivation
5 Criteria for identifying prime lands, moderate prime lands and marginal lands in Karnataka and Andhra Pradesh were developed. Land resource inventory technology (LRI of Polba-Dadpur, Bukkarayasamudhrum mandal, Kangeyam, Palani and Needamangalam blocks) was developed to bridge to provide site-specific and farmer friendly database on all the land resources occurring at field level for each and every village
6 Need for site specific land resource database for integrated watershed management was demonstrated and implemented in selected watersheds under Sujala-III project. Land Resource Inventory portal and LRI based decision support system were developed for science based watershed development programme (SUJALA III project)
